I want to start off by thanking each and everyone of you that commented on my last post. You are all so very kind and I was smiling through the tears as I read! I'm still hurt, still very uneasy with this placement, but trying my hardest to step past these feelings and push ahead! So this is where I could use your help! I have a few questions and would love for you to answer.

So what better way to get your advice than a linky?

Oh Jessica! I am so sorry!! I just now read your post about being moved. If this is a for sure thing, maybe you can look at it as a way for you to see exactly what your k students need to be prepared for first and will make you an even better k teacher than you already are! I hope this can be a positive for you after the shock and hurt lessen. :)

I'm so sorry! This is exactly what I went through this year...except that they didn't tell me until the day before school started! At least you'll have all summer to prepare. The best part of 1st grade, in my opinion, is that they are much better writers than kinders! It was sooo much fun to teach writing this year! Honestly you can take a lot of your K stuff and just bump it up a bit for first grade - I found that most of my materials were still appropriate. Just hang in there and you can do it!

So since I haven't taught firsties i won't pretend to know what they need but with my want toteach them I have pinned quite a few ideas for a first grade classroom. One of my favorites is a reading center that includes crates with a stuffed mat on top. These act as a seat for reading around the table and as storage for each reading groups materials. These crates also hold hanging file folders which is great for paperwork and assessment storage. I think the option of sitting on the crate instead of a regular chair would make reading time different and special for a class of firsties. Best of luck with your planning,
God Bless,
Christine

Hi Jessica! I teach first grade and LOVE it. I had taught kinder for 3 years and then got moved to a combined 3/4 class and now I have settled down in first. I must say, it's by far my favorite. Some of my favorite things about first graders are that they are so inquisitive, they love to learn, are silly and are SPONGES! They soak up anything you tell them. I would be happy to email with you about some things that really worked for me and what flopped for me! Three things that really work for me: The Daily 5, any ideas from the website: The First Grade Parade (you must check it out if you haven't been there!), and Math bins.

Come stop by my blog http://adayinbcasfirstgrade.blogspot.com/

and email me at caseybean4@gmail.com

I'm sure you will LOVE firsties!!

Cara at The First Grade Parade has an awesome blog. But she did say she might be changing grade levels too. Michelle at First Grade and Fabulous is amazing too. Christie at First Grade Fever is awesome too. I wish I could help more, but I'm moving to first grade for the first time too, my choice, though. I know you are going to be amazing in first grade.

I have just started following your blog because I am moving from 1st grade to kindergarten. Now I am sad that you are leaving K but very excited for you. Just in the short time that I have been following you, I have learned alot from you. Your first grade students will be so blessed to have you for their teacher! You will enjoy watching the firsties grow! It gives me goose bumps every time I think about the progress they make in the short time that you have them. Plus, you can't beat the hugs! Be blessed in this opportunity that God had given you!

I moved from 2nd down to 1st (against my will) and the hardest thing I found was how much help they need in the beginning to do their work. The good thing about moving up is that you can kind of pick up where you left off last year...
I have been in 1st for 3 years now and it's great! You'll love it. They are just older kinders! Stop by my blog and see if I have anything to help you out!

I have been teaching 1st grade for over 15 years and I really like it and I think you will too once you get started! It is a very busy and big year with a lot of new learning happening for the students! I really like First Grade Parade, First Grade A La Carte, Lory's Page, and many others that I am sure you will find! I will leave my email address and if you need anything (I am sure you will have great teammates!) don't hesitate to contact me and I would be happy to help out (if possible!) :)
Good Luck!
